The moon had crested to its zenith. It hung suspended in the sky, closer to dawn than midnight, when Antara opened her eyes. Myth and magic greeted her sleepy gaze through the gap in the floor length curtain drawn to one side.  Ross was out on the balcony, with his hands curled over the railing. His wings were free, bathed in a moon river that painted him silver. Only the tips of his feathers stirred. Rippling like liquid metal under the caress of a subtle pre-dawn breeze.
Her breath caught and stalled in her lungs. It wasn't so much the sculpted perfection of his physique that did it. Rather, it was the ethereal reminder that the man out there was anything but human. In his rightful form, in an unguarded moment like this where even the moon couldn't resist touching him, she understood why there were those that had worshipped him as a god.
He must have felt her eyes on him, for he turned and caught her in the blue glow of his gaze. Her blood warmed. Her skin flushed and, for a moment, her mind filled with at least half a dozen erotic things she wanted him to do to her. Then he held out his hand to her.
“Come fly with me.”
Beneath the layers of hedonistic indulgence smoking through his voice, lay a deeper note of gravity that intrigued her.
Naked, she slid out from under the light covering of the sheet, stood, and reached for her robe.
He shook his head. “No. Just as you are.”
She let the silk garment fall to the floor and stepped out onto the balcony wearing only a shy smile. She took his hand. Warm, capable, and elegant fingers laced through hers.
“What if someone sees us?” she whispered.
He smiled, drew her in closer against the hard wall of his body and curled his wings about her. She shivered beneath the sensual brush of feathered tips over her ass and the backs of her thighs.
“Then they will know that you are mine.”
He let go of her hand and wrapped his arms around her. She circled hers about his neck and stared up into his eyes, drifting away in the endless ocean of exquisite blue. The weapon, Hermes, Diana, Apollo, the war they had spoken of… everything melted away until there was only the two of them.
Warmed by his feathered embrace, she became aware of the air cooling her extremities—feet, forearms, and fingers, laced at the nape of his neck. Antara looked down and gasped. No longer were they on the solid balcony running the length of the windowed wall, the penthouse lay far below. Instinctively, she tightened her grip.
“How…?” She looked back up at him to find his gaze hadn’t left her. “Your wings aren’t moving,” she whispered in awe.
“I let go and trust the universe to catch me,” he replied, with the mysteries of antiquity shading his voice.
He held her there for a while, hovered high in the air. Below them, the slumbering neighbourhood spread out a glittering quilt of street lamps and traffic lights. She felt the moment he decided upon movement. It was there in the sudden release of power that surged through the thick slabs of muscle coating his chest, shoulders, and back. His wings unfurled from around her, stretched to their fullest extension, and then swept through the air.
Antara bit her lip and screwed her eyes shut. He laughed. Deep and melodious. The sound of a thousand summer nights spiced with cinnamon, kissed with myrrh and cooled with rain. Forcing her eyes open again, the expression on his face was joy in its purest form. It shone from his pores and lit up his eyes, stretched his grin wide and…melted her insides.
“You love it, don’t you?” she whispered, soaking in the sight of him revelling in the freedom of flight.
His head turned, and his mouth found the side of her neck. Hot breath fanned her skin when he replied, “Flying is best with love in my arms.”

“Cassie! Where ya been?” A dripping wet Fallon trotted around the pool toward me.
“A little R and R,” I lied to keep up the charade. I didn’t want to explain the atrocity that had become my life.
“Jelly!” She rolled her eyes. “How’d you get something like that, you’ve been gone forever?” She emphasized the forever in an exaggerated accent.
“I guess I was stressed,” I shrugged.
“You missed all the drama, girl.” Her eyes were as big as saucers, her lips pursed like a fish to emphasize all the crazy. It took everything in me not to roll my eyes.
“Fill me in.” I really didn’t want to know, but it was expected and I didn’t want to hurt Fallon’s feelings.
“Not while you’re wearing that,” she frowned at me. I looked down. I was in a thin shirt that was boxy and not flattering, the only thing under it was a sports bra and cotton panties with leggings. So much for inconspicuous. I looked like I had recently escaped a mental institution. I tapped my bra self-consciously; the two vials of liquid were still there.
To fit in, I manifested a bathing suit, and a tiny purse to hold my vials, then trailed after Fallon as she chatted her way to the pool.
“Persephone is finally gone, we have a new boss. Ohemgee, Cassie, he’s fucking hot, like hot hot, not like nerdy hot Brandon. Like my panties are tingly wet just thinking about him.” She squeezed my arm and I tried not to wince. “He’s not exactly receptive to any of us, though. Kind of scowly, and bossy. He yelled at me a few times.”
“Scowly?” I asked. She rolled her eyes and handed me a beer from the cooler next to the pool.
“Oh, and Trish and Otto are an item, like really an item, moved their shit into one house and stuff, calling themselves Trotto, or maybe Trito, I don’t know, but it’s weird. Em said she heard them fighting and hot new boss guy went over there to break it up. It was a mess.”
“Trish and Otto?” I asked stupidly. I couldn’t place an Otto.
“Yeah, they do make a cute couple,” Fallon sighed and glanced over at Trent who was sun bathing, even though he could tan with a thought. Fallon had been crushing on him for a while. Sensing eyes on him, Trent sat up, took his sunglasses off, and did the cool-guy-chin-jut-greeting thing.
“Hey Cassie! You’re back. Boss said you’d be back today. Well, he said the missing operative would be back today. Never said your name or anything, just that if we see 'the missing operative', to tell her to go to his office immediately because he’s tired of being fucking short-staffed…” Trent said in one breath.
“Yeah, I think I already have a case,” I responded despondently. I guess it made sense, considering I was supposed to be on some kind of weird Afterlife vacation for the last month. I really didn’t want another case though.
“Already, really girl?” Fallon rolled her eyes. “Whatevs, you’ve been off duty for like months. Wish.” I had the urge to tell her all about my off duty status. Maybe that would wipe that frown off her face, but I bit my tongue and kept it to myself.
“Months? It was that long for you guys too?” For some reason I thought it would only be that long for me.
“Yeah, you never came back from your last case. That was like, at least 3 months ago.” Fallon frowned at me. “We thought something happened, or you got promoted without them telling us. That would have sucked. They didn’t tell us shit. But it happens like that sometimes.”
“They said it was only a month or two,” I replied. “That’s what they told me.” Fallon shook her head and Trent looked skeptical.
“You were on R and R and you didn’t know how long it was? Where did you go? Antarctica?” Trent asked.
“Uh, no, just like a relaxing place in Afterlife.”
“I’ve never heard of an operative doing that.” Trent got up from his chair so he could grab a beer.
“I don’t like to be normal,” I shrugged and Fallon laughed a little harder than the joke required, like she was faking it or didn’t get the joke.
“Don’t worry. No one thinks you’re normal.” She laughed again loudly and I frowned, not sure if I should take it as a compliment or an insult.

Author Bio:
A lifelong lover of words and reading, Savannah Verte hasn’t quite figured out what she wants to write when she grows up. Born and raised in the upper Midwest, Savannah’s gypsy spirit and never quit attitude keep her busy and seldom idle. For so many reasons, Savannah considers herself a ‘Contemporary Vagabond’ when it comes to writing and hopes that others find her diverse offerings as enjoyable to read as they are to write.

As the primary owner and driving force behind Eclectic Bard Books she considers herself immensely fortunate to see writing from varied perspectives as she endeavors to publish the authors rostered there. Working with other writers, Savannah gets to expand her horizons every day as someone brings a new idea to the table and the brainstorming begins. There is something addictive about the creative process for her and helping other authors embrace their dreams make hers a reality daily.

That’s the official Savannah, the unofficial version is just a girl who loves experiencing life with every twist and turn it takes. When she was born, she had such fine, light hair that her mother used to tape bows to her head so people would know she was a girl. She’s had a host of crazy unrelated jobs- everything from cake decorator, dry cleaner, and insurance agent to Emergency Room assistant, bartender, crime lab tech and bouncer. Savannah loves air hockey but completely sucks at it. She loves good jazz, good scotch, and antiques but also old rock, a quiet tea, and a tidy home. She’s completely technology impaired and can get it after she’s broken the computer or done it ass-backwards a few times… Thank Gods that there are some amazing meme creators that let her pilfer images or she’d be lost. Lime green is her color, the rhinoceros is her logo & philosophy, and she’s completely mad about seeing new authors try.
